The
new Woodhorn Northumberland Museum, Archives and Country Park
is built on the site of the old Woodhorn Colliery and is a celebration
of the traditions and lives of the old mining community.
The
stunning new building was designed by RMJM Architects who are
responsible for such diverse buildings as the Chinese University
of Hong Kong as well as the Gazprom HQ in St. Petersburg. It
is undoubtedly the striking, sculptured roof structure, inspired
by the mechanical cutting that once took place in the underground
mines, which sets the building apart. This iconic roof formation,
consisting of a dynamic fan configuration with blades set at
exacting angles, certainly provides the Woodhorn 'Wow' factor.
The
majority of the structural elements in this extraordinary roof
assembly have been manufactured and provided by Architectural
Profiles Limited of Reading who have built their reputation
on the structural integrity of their roofing and cladding systems
and the design opportunities that they make available to architects.
At Woodhorn, APL have provided the Long Span Structural Deck,
the Tritherm spacer system for the 250mm insulated cavity between
roof deck and Standing Seam external roof.
APL
are extremely pleased to have been specified for such a prestigious
project and one which so clearly demonstrates the versatility
of their products and systems.
